Keep up the good work!
Practice, practice, practice if you want to improve. Improve what? Anything! The Olympic participants do it and so do comedians.
‘Olympic athletes train hard and with dedication for many years to reach the elite level. They typically train between 700–900 hours per year, which is about 13–17 hours per week.’ (Generative AI from Google.) That’s a LOT of practice to achieve their goals. Again, a LOT of practice, but it gets them to where they want to be.
A year ago, I began a new venture – stand-up comedy nights for people who had attended my comedy workshops, be that clowning or stand-up. It was a platform for people to build confidence in their work, so they would have enhanced skills to perform elsewhere. They are bold, brave and beautiful people. Thanks, and well done you funny people.
In the world of stand up, it takes time to discover your style and persona, which are inherently linked to your material, attitude and how you relate to an audience. Never mind nurturing the extreme self-confidence and vulnerability needed to deliver a comedy set. Oh, and crafting, practicing and honing comedy sets – joke writing.
Interestingly, overall, there are people that when they return to the courses, they become more skillfull, and through practice, practice, practice, they develop confidence, resilience and of course material to include in their comedy sets. Goals met, no matter how big or small… plus you won’t need to train for 17 hours per week – phew!
This week is my last stand-up comedy Mash Up this summer (I am having a holiday). Come along on Thursday 25 July and see several very different comedians share their new and developing sets at Comedy Mash-Up City Gate Hotel, Iron Gate Exeter.
NOW YOUR TURN?
If you want to experience a snappy taster-stand-up comedy workshop, join me at 6pm on Thursday 25 July at the City Gate Hotel. Super supportive! Afterwards, come see the comedians at the Mash-Up, for free! Several people from the last workshop have since booked on for the next course in September - bravo!
EARLY BIRD, EARLY BIRD - TAKE ADVANTAGE!
This is booking fast so grab your space before they go.
Next comedy course starts Tuesday 10 September. Enjoy the sunshine, Olympics and look for the funny this summer.
As usual, a huge thanks for your support from Maggie and the team :)
